Awhile back we posted a video called “Read A Book.” It’s a video you probably already know about. The video was created by BET to get its audience to read more books and to take better care of themselves. While I’m still not a fan of the video I thought we’d post follow up videos of CNN having a sit down discussion with parents who were turned off by the video’s content. The videos also include a discussion with the video’s creators
Do you think the video was just harmless satire or did it go too far?
Outside of the language, I don’t see anything wrong with this cartoon at all. I do think that it’s a dickslap to all of those sanctamonious rappers who go on about ‘keepin’ it real’ and talking about how life really is
when it’s about getting free booty-popping. I like how they juxtaposed the so-called ‘lifestyle’ that most of these young kids think can be theirs with the basic necessities ie education, hygiene, etc. that will benefit them within their lives.
Mind you, I’m an adult and can understand what the creators were getting at; too bad that CNN anchor was all about being Glenn Beck and popping off at the mouth without having to listen to anyone. The parents have the right to be upset, but ultimately, they have the power to prevent their kids from seeing it by restricting TV time or getting rid of their cable alltogether.
The sad thing is that the creators of The Simpsons and South Park had much more leeway than these people and this cartoon may have been a one-off for them.
I completely agree with you Piper. the video was harmless, could’ve been done differently but then again it wouldn’t have receive any attention. Personally why parents let their young teens watch BET in the first place is beyond me. I’m an adult and I stopped watching BET long ago because everytime I turned it on all I saw where girls shaking their asses and guys talking about all the money, hoes, wheels, clothes, or talk about murking someone. This was pretty brilliant slap on the face to all of that. The fact it’s played on BET makes be laugh because they’re the ones playing all of that garbage in the first place.
